| Hi everyone. So much has happened since the last blog! Over spring break dad and I visited mom in Virginia (she was better about posting the pics than I was). I would absolutely love to go back there sometime, it's a great state. I especially enjoyed Washington D.C. That city has so much history and importance to it and it was great to get to tour all of those famous places I had until then only read about. In May Laura came home for a couple weeks and was also able to make it to fayetteville. Currently Sarah and I are planning to visit her in November, that is if I am able to afford it somehow but I'm working on that. Most recently I have moved into a new apartment with a roommate and finished up the spring semester. Here are some photos of the new apartment:
Dining room/ kitchen.
My roommate John's room.
My room.
Keebler approves.
My bathroom.
Keebs has this new fascination of sitting in the bathtub and watching me get ready in the mornings, he loves it. I'm still on track to graduate this spring, and I don't foresee anything preventing that from happening. As of now, I'm taking a few classes over the summer and trying to work whenever I can. I guess you could say my summer has been a little boring, but that's perfectly fine and exactly what I need. I'm still working at Old Navy and occasionally get a few babysitting gigs here and there. I really like the families that I sit for. The kids are great and the parents are very nice. Both families have two kids so it just enough for me to handle; I don't think I could do 3. This fall I'll be serving as an officer for the spanish honor society and hopefully I'll be elected to the senate for student government. I barely missed it last year so I have my fingers crossed this time around. Becky
| Hello to all! I've been trying to think of an amazing excuse for not writing a blog in nearly a year, but alas, I have none and I am ashamed of myself. To my faithful readers who spoke to me over christmas break I apologize. I only took this long to write simply because I wanted to make you squirm a little :) Classes started back up in mid january. Two spanish classes, two latin american studies classes, biology, and biology lab. Nothing too impossible except for the biology lab every wednesday night from 6-9pm. Let's just say there are other things I'd rather be doing than counting the legs of a sowbug under a microscope. Spring break is 2 weeks away and I CANNOT wait. I'm headed to virginia to see mom for a few days, dad will be joining us as well. I already have a list of things that I want to see, I have absolutely no problem being the cliche tourist with the camera around her neck. Not literally, it'll probably be in my pocket. Either way, it will be a well deserved break and I can't wait for it. Hopefully it will be warm. It is the end of february and it is snowing outside. SNOW! I wish the weather would make up its mind...two days ago I was literally wearing flip-flops and a t-shirt. I just have to throw in a random picture...this one of from the oscars party last sunday. The bar we were at had a pool for who could guess the most oscar winners, I didn't win but I came quite close. Here is my friend Keith and I... Also I have been told that my blog is semi-hard to read due to it's fancy artwork. Not a problem, if you haven't noticed I made a few modifications. I know this blog has been pathetic in length and quality but my laundry just got done drying and I've gotta go fold it; we don't want any wrinkles now do we. I PROMISE this is the first of many more blogs to come. No more of this once a year shit, I'm getting back in the habit now. More later, love you all. | | |
| Hello all, yes, it's been a while! So, here I sit, waiting on my laundry, ready to blog. This past weekend was tons-o-fun. Sarah's baby showers, Laura's b-day/sendoff, plus mom, dad, and Laura were able to come up to Fayetteville for a couple days. It was nice to see everyone again. Unfortunately I do not posess any pictures of the events that took place, it was my duty to be photographer with other people's cameras. For lots of photos of Sarah's baby showers and Laura's birthday party, check out her xanga site (Sarahmcow). The photos that I do have are when Josh and I took Laura out for her birthday after everyone else crashed at the house. I guess the lighting at this place wasn't too grand, you can hardly see my face.
Laura and Josh.
This place was a karoake bar so Josh serenaded Laura for her birthday.
I found a random guy wearing this hat and I just had to have it, so I got a picture of it.
Laura making friends with the before mentioned random guy.
Saturday night Laura and I went out again but only for about 20 minutes, she had to leave the next morning. But of course she couldn't come to fayetteville without saying hello to Keith and Don.
As we were leaving we took a picture of the gang. It kinda looks like christmas behind us but it's just dickson street. It was awesome to see Laura again before she took off for Africa.
| Back in January I cancelled my cable and internet because of the limited amount of spare time that I have since classes began. It's actually been going quite well, mainly in part to my neighbor not having a security lock on his wireless internet so I was still able to get online. Recently that is not the case though :( Either they moved or cancelled the service because it is no longer available to me. So, here I am sitting at Panera Bread, taking advantage of their free wi-fi while I eat a bagel. Classes have been going excellently. I received my mid-semester progress grades and I'm proud to say that I have all B's. Not to brag but I'm actually doing well compared to my classmates, the a lot of whom are failing. I have pictures of another completed project! The concept was to create a space to display 6 specific sculptures. The basic site was already defined for us, we basically just had to put up walls that created 4 distinct areas, (3 of the sculptures were displayed as a set). The "study model" is below: it's made of an inexpensive cardboard type material called chipboard. The purpose for a study model is to have a model that you can rip things apart or still move items around. Nothing is worse than watching someone rip apart something that you spent hours building, and frankly I think the professors enjoy doing it a little too much.
With the study model, we had to create inserts of floor plans. You can see how the inserts have holes cut in them to fit over the colums so they just slide in and out.
The pic below shows the completed study model with the roof, which is also removable to see the floorplans. If you can see, the walls don't go all the way to the roof. That was one of the rules of the project, that we are not allowed to use artificial light. Later on we cut root openings to better illuminate the space.
All of our final models have to be made from museum board. The finished product is beautiful but it's not easy to get there. This material is EXTREMELY unforgiving regarding scuffs and dirt so it's really difficult to keep it clean and pretty. Not to mention it's about $15 for a 4ft x 3ft sheet of it. It took about 2 sheets to build this model.
Here you can see my finished floor plan, I also built little the sculptures to scale to help illustrate my idea.
With every model we build we have the technical drawings to accompany it. The one below is of my floor plan.
We also had to shade the sectional drawings to demonstrate how our space is lit by the sun.
Below is a picture of my studio class. Not all of the desks are shown, it's a huge open room of about 50 desks.
Here are some projects lined up for a review. As you can see all of the models are the same size and shape, only the floorplans are different for each one. The models are matched with the drawings above it. Of the three models in a row on the wall, mine is the middle one in the photo.
Only a couple overnights for this one. I don't remember how many hours though, it was a 2 week long project so I'd estimate about 100. Our next one is already underway...STAIRS! Stay tuned...
| Hello all! I do apologize for the non-posting in the last month, that's my bad. School is going extremely well, definitely keeping me busy. Here's some photos of one of my projects...we had to take a photo that showed some sort of anomoly in it and also demonstrated extreme contrast (lights and darks) in it, then change it to black and white, then draw it on 22x36 inch paper with a pencil. I took a photo of some tree bark that was leaking sap.
The ones below show some work in progress.
This is my little drafting table at home, it came in VERY handy during this project. This top is tilted, unlike the ones at the school studio which are competely flat and really suck to sit at for 10 hours straight. Anyone interested in donating to my chiropractic fund just let me know.
The lighting isn't very too good in the studio so this photo didn't turn out so well, but it sort of resembles the original photo right? Trust me, it looks much better from 10 feet away when you squint. Sarah was priviledged enough to see it in person but I didn't have the original photo to accompany it, so it looked kinda crazy I'm sure. The colored bar along the bottom is my coloring scale. I had to incorporate each shade into the photo. Keep in mind there is not a spot of white anywhere in this drawing, all of it is done with a lead point without rubbing or shading. This project took me about 70 hours and a week and a half to finish; I averaged about 40 minutes per square inch. My instructors have recommended to each student that they document their work so I'll probably be posting all of my project photos on this blog. We're working on our first model at the moment so stay tuned, there will be pics soon!
